I’ve been digging into how competitive titles handle replay systems and save-state serialization, and I’m curious how you folks are approaching the tradeoffs. For delta snapshotting, are you storing full keyframes at fixed intervals and delta-compressing the in-between frames, or going fully delta-based? What keyframe interval are you running at, and how did you decide on that cadence? I keep landing around 100ms (10fps keyframes) for fast-paced shooters, but I’m seeing input latency spikes during the replay encode pass that I can’t fully explain.

On determinism, are you locking to fixed-point arithmetic or normalizing floating-point ops across the team’s different GPU/CPU builds? We’ve hit nondeterministic replay drift on AMD vs Intel rigs, which is rough when you’re trying to validate frame-perfect inputs. Separately, how are you benchmarking frametime consistency under load—running replay encoding alongside the live game loop, or post-hoc? And at what point does the encode bottleneck start eating into your target frametimes on mid-tier hardware? Happy to share our profiling numbers if anyone’s tackling the same scaling issues.

The core architectural decision here is really about determinism versus snapshot size, and most competitive titles end up doing a hybrid. Pure full-state snapshots are dead simple to serialize—just dump the whole engine state via reflection or a manual flattening pass—but you blow up storage and I/O fast, which is a non-issue for local replays but painful when you’re streaming from disk mid-playback. The titles I’ve benchmarked that matter for competitive integrity (think fighting games and RTS titles) lean toward deterministic lockstepping with fixed-point math so the exact same inputs reproduce identical frames on any hardware. The killer problem nobody talks about is nondeterminism from the CPU: FMA contraction, SIMD reordering, and multithreaded scheduler variance can all break frame-identical replay. If you’re building this yourself, pin your simulation to a fixed timestep on an isolated core and disable FMA contraction at compile time, or you’ll get replays that diverge after a few seconds of combat.

On the hardware side, the serialization bottleneck usually lands in memory bandwidth and random read latency rather than raw compute. A full 60Hz replay state of a fast-paced title can easily be 50-200MB depending on

The first decision you have to nail down is whether you’re going frame-based (input recording + deterministic re-simulation) or full-state serialization, because it completely dictates the rest of the design. For competitive titles I’d strongly push deterministic lockstep with frame-input recording—your replay file stays tiny (sometimes
