I’ve been digging into how PCIe Resizable BAR actually maps VRAM into the CPU address space, and I want to understand the mechanics behind the stutter reduction people claim. When you enable ReBAR on an RDNA2 or RDNA3 card with Smart Access Memory, does the GPU really get full 4GB+ access to system RAM in a single contiguous window, or is the memory controller still paging? And how does bus transaction batching actually work here—when the CPU issues draw calls that reference GPU resources, does the whole VRAM range get exposed in one BAR window, or does it chunk by page frame? I’ve read the specs but nobody’s explained the physical layer clearly.

For competitive titles where frame pacing matters, what’s your real-world experience? Are you seeing consistent frame times with ReBAR enabled, or just higher average FPS? Does the latency of accessing system memory through the exposed window ever hurt more than it helps in CPU-bound scenarios? I’ve noticed some games seem to benefit while others actually stutter worse. Anyone have data on optimal BAR sizing relative to your VRAM, and does enabling it on a PCIe 3.0 bus still deliver gains, or do you lose throughput to the narrower lane width?

Great topic to break down. On the fundamental mechanics: Resizable BAR works by expanding the PCIe BAR0 memory-mapped region that the CPU can address into GPU VRAM. By default, the PCIe spec and legacy BIOS conventions cap that aperture at 256MB regardless of physical VRAM, so the driver has to constantly stage and stream geometry/textures through a limited window—adding copy overhead and cache-thrashing. When you enable ReBAR (BIOS ”
