Overclocking PBO (Precision Boost Overdrive) Curve Optimizer vs Fixed All-Core Clocks: Competitive Benchmark Analysis and Hårdvara Interactions

[Christian Mitchell]

I’ve been running controlled benchmarks on my Ryzen 9800X3D for the past few weeks, comparing PBO Curve Optimizer negative tuning against a fixed all-core clock, and I’m torn on which approach actually serves competitive shooters better. My concern isn’t peak FPS—I get similar numbers either way—but frametime consistency and whether aggressive CO tuning is silently eating my single-thread peak boost during ranked sessions. When I push -30 on the pcores, I see occasional micro-stutters in the 1% lows during longer matches, but a fixed 5.2GHz all-core keeps frametimes dead flat. Does anyone have empirical data showing whether the CO approach preserves single-thread boost headroom under sustained load, or does scalar tuning end up capping it?

I’m also curious about hardware scaling between samples. My chip seems to need significantly more voltage than my buddy’s to hold the same clocks with stable CO, and I’ve read this varies wildly even within the same bin. How much of the frametime variance you see is process variation versus just tuning philosophy? And for anyone running both setups, what temperature thresholds did you use when deciding between CO and fixed clocks—do you prioritize lower temps and efficiency, or just raw 0.1% lows?
