I’ve been tearing my hair out over why my closed-back planars, despite their driver specs, collapse the soundstage in a way that costs me edge placements in FPS titles. Here’s what I actually want to dig into: how do we mathematically model the soundstage difference between open and closed architectures beyond the usual “air passes through” hand-waving? Specifically, how does the sealed rear cavity of a closed-back design alter the driver’s acoustic loading and rear-wave cancellation, and is the imaging degradation primarily a phase-coherence issue or a resonance-tail problem? For competitive play, I need sub-10ms directional cues, so transient response is non-negotiable.

Second question: when comparing planar magnetic vs dynamic drivers in these two enclosures, how does the diaphragm mass interact with cavity resonance frequency to shift the imaging sweet spot? Can anyone point me toward the actual equations for driver-to-coustic-load impedance matching, or is most of the published data still manufacturer marketing? I’m looking for peer-reviewed acoustics papers or at least solid derivations, not blog speculation. Anyone here has actually measured these with REW or run the simulations?
