I’ve been benching my rig across multiple high-refresh panels and the color depth question keeps coming up in my testing—specifically the real-world tradeoffs of pushing 10-bit RGB full-spectrum versus sticking with 8-bit at 240Hz+. On paper the bandwidth math seems straightforward, but I’m seeing weird artifacts on certain scales. Does anyone here have hands-on data on where the DP 1.4/HDMI 2.1 bandwidth ceiling actually bites when you’re running 10-bit at high refresh rates? And more importantly, how much latency do you actually feel from FRC dithering when the panel has to simulate 10-bit through 8-bit + FRC? For a competitive shooter player, even a few milliseconds of dithering delay matters.

On the engine side, I’ve noticed that some games hard-lock to 8-bit output regardless of panel capability, while others expose the bit-depth setting but then break dithering implementation. Has anyone dug into whether Unreal or the engine’s color pipeline caps output before it even reaches the scaler? Also curious about chromatic clarity complaints—do people actually notice banding or color separation differences in fast-moving competitive titles, or is that purely a single-frame/screenshot concern? Any benchmark numbers or panel-specific architecture breakdowns you can share would be gold.
