I’ve been running A/B benchmarks between Lumen’s hierarchical screen-space GI and dedicated hardware ray tracing on my 4090 rig, and the frame time predictability gap at 240+ FPS is where it gets messy. Lumen’s adaptive resolution approach keeps my 1% lows tight in competitive titles, but I’m hitting wall-like stutter whenever it resamples the virtual depth buffer mid-frame. Meanwhile, hardware RT gives me rock-solid coherence but burns 12-15ms just on the trace pass, which tanks my frame pacing when I’m pushing 240Hz.

Has anyone actually benchmarked surface cache-based GI cards against screen-space radiance accumulation in a real 240 FPS scenario? Specifically, how do you handle the temporal feedback latency in Lumen when tracking fast-moving light sources, and is the stutter you feel from RT trace overhead worth the coherence gain for tournament-grade competitive play? Also—anyone running hybrid approaches where coarse RT bounces feed the screen-space pass? Where’s the practical crossover point where hardware RT stops being a liability at high refresh rates?
