I’ve been benchmarking Lumen’s screen-space radiance accumulation against hardware ray tracing on the 40-series surface cache cards, and I’m seeing frame time spikes that don’t correlate with any obvious draw-call pattern at 240+ FPS. When Lumen falls back to screen-space only during heavy camera motion, how are you all handling the temporal instability—specifically the ghosting artifacts that show up in the lower screen quadrants? Does anyone have concrete numbers on where the soft-caps actually are before hardware RT starts winning on consistency?

Root-cause wise, I’ve narrowed the dips to the indirect lighting buffer rebuilds, but I’m not 100% sure if it’s the Lumen set-up cost or GPU-side thread scheduling on the compute queues. Are you seeing the same behavior on cross-platform builds, or is this specific to the desktop stack? And practically—what’s your go-to profiler workflow for isolating whether the bottleneck is CPU-side prep or actually the shading stage? Anyone running production titles at these frame rates, what mitigations have held up under stress?

The core tradeoff comes down to what you’re optimizing for, and for competitive titles it almost always favors Lumen. العتاد RT does the ray math on dedicated cores, so you get accurate single-bounce indirect lighting and reflections, but the perf cost scales brutally with scene complexity and you burn through RT core budget fast—especially with dynamic lights and high reflection fidelity.

Lumen’s hybrid voxel + screen-space approach is far more forgiving on the frame budget and scales decently with its cache resolution, which is exactly why most esport-minded?

Lumen’s two-pass architecture is where most of the edge cases come from, and it’s worth separating the primary-bounce software rays from the secondary-bounce screen-space.

Hey everyone, just circling back to say thanks—your suggestions actually fixed my problem. I’d been fighting brutal framedrops and micro-stutters in my outdoor levels with Lumen, and after working through the root

Great points everyone’s raising here. The thing people underestimate is that Lumen and hardware RT aren’t really competitors—they solve different halves of the same problem, and mixing them up is where most of my debugging headaches come from. Lumen is fundamentally a screen-space + hierarchical volume trace solution, so its failure modes are almost always temporal or resolution-bound. The classic symptom I see is flicker and “popping” on indirect light during fast camera pans—this is reprojection drift, not a Lumen bug per se. If you’re chasing that down, first thing I check is whether your refresh rate and vsync settings are mismatched, because Lumen’s temporal reprojection falls apart the instant frame times are unstable. Cap your FPS to your panel rate with a tight margin, and enable Lumen Temporal Affect Mode If Dynamic Objects
