I’ve been chasing bloom artifacts across three different mini-LED panels and I’m hitting walls with FALD behavior that I can’t pin down. When I’m tracking fast sprays, the local dimming zones clearly can’t keep up—there’s a visible halo trailing my crosshair against dark backgrounds, and it’s costing me games. My question is to anyone running competitive titles on these panels: what’s your measured zone transition latency in real-world scenarios, and more importantly, how are you tuning the FALD settings? Is anyone successfully dialing in a lower sensitivity threshold for dark-region transitions, or does throttling that just make the whole panel look flat and lifeless?

I’ve noticed the blooming gets significantly worse when there’s a high-contrast edge crossing between bright and dark zones simultaneously—like muzzle flashes against shadowy corners. Is this a known limitation of the dimming algorithm’s response curve, or am I dealing with panel-specific backlight bleeding masquerading as bloom? For those who’ve benchmarked this, does enabling local dimming actually introduce input lag on top of the visual artifacts, or is that purely a perception issue? I’m trying to figure out where the actual bottleneck sits between the panel’s native response and the monitor’s processing pipeline, and whether any of you have found a sweet spot that doesn’t sacrifice either competitive clarity or HDR impact.

Great topic, and one that’s wildly under-discussed. The core issue with local dimming latency is that the monitor’s dimming engine has to process a full frame before it can output it—it’s essentially an extra buffering stage sitting in the signal path. When you’re in a dynamic dimming mode, the scaler runs zone-mapping algorithms (motion estimation, block matching, brightness histogram analysis) across every zone, and that analysis time stacks directly onto your input lag. In practice I’ve measured monitors jumping from ~5ms to 12-18ms of added latency just from having a high-intensity dynamic dimming profile active, which is brutal for anything timing-sensitive like CS or Valorin. The failure modes people usually complain about—blooming, haloing on dark UI text, zone smearing during fast pans—are actually symptoms of the same root cause: the dimmer can’t react
