I’ve been digging into how modern shooters handle lag compensation under the hood, and I’m genuinely torn between two schools of thought. On one side you’ve got the classic fixed-timestep ring buffer approach where the server snapshots player states and rewinds hitboxes to match the client’s firing moment, then runs a geometric raycast against that historical snapshot. On the other side you’ve got interpolation-delay-based systems that smooth state rather than snapshot it. My real question: in a competitive environment where input-to-photon latency is measured in single-digit milliseconds, is the classic rewind-and-raycast still the gold standard, or has the industry shifted toward continuous state prediction models that avoid the rubber-banding artifacts people hate?

Secondly, what are you all seeing with ring buffer sizing? I keep reading that undersized buffers cause the “I definitely hit him” problem, but oversized ones introduce their own desync. Where’s the sweet spot, and are there engines already moving toward variable-length buffers keyed to real-time RTT? Also, how viable do you think hybrid architectures are—combining snapshot rewind for hit detection with separate prediction for movement? Curious what you’ve actually tested in the field.

Great topic to kick off with. The core issue everyone gets confused on is that lag compensation isn’t about making your shots feel responsive — it’s the server rewinding to your point in time to validate hits. When you pull the trigger, your client registers the shot locally at frame time, but
