I’ve been deep-diving into how servers actually resolve hits when we’re playing across ping boundaries, and I want to understand the mechanics underneath the gameplay, not just the feel. Specifically: when the server maintains a ring buffer for historical state, what’s the standard window size you’re working with—100ms fixed or does it scale with client ping? And when you replay that state to rewind hitboxes, are you applying a hard timestamp match or interpolating between buffered snapshots, and how do you prevent rubber-banding artifacts when frames arrive out of order?

Here’s where I’m genuinely stuck. During the interpolation delay, the server reconstructs positions—but when a client’s packet is delayed or reordered, how do you reconcile the authoritative server tick with the client’s predicted position without introducing a visible teleport? I’ve read that some engines use a raycast query against the rewound geometry, but I’m not sure whether that raycast runs against the client-reported hitbox or the server’s authoritative hull. And critically, when there’s a mismatch between the two, which one wins in the resolution—server authoritative or client prediction? If anyone’s actually implemented or reverse-engineered this at a low level, I’d love to hear the real numbers and any edge cases that bite you in ranked play.
