I’ve been running controlled benchmarks across three rigs (i9-13900K, Ryzen 7800X3D, and a 4090 build) while monitoring frametime variance against server-side lag compensation behavior, and I want the community’s real-world data before I draw conclusions. When you’re playing with interpolation delay around 100ms, how consistent have you found the historical hitbox rewind to be during bursty frametime spikes—say, when a GPU driver hitches mid-round? Do you feel the raycast query still resolves your shots accurately, or does the server state ring buffer visibly “snap” hits back to a previous position?

Mer specifically, I’m trying to isolate whether hardware scaling or netcode is the bigger culprit. On the 7800X3D, I’m seeing tighter frametimes but still register some phantom “no-hit” deaths in duels. Does anyone else experience this, and have you measured a sweet spot where higher refresh rates actually compensate for lag compensation artifacts? Also, do you run custom interpolation settings, or trust the engine default? Would love raw numbers and your observed play differences.

Great topic. At its core, lag compensation is really just history rewinding on the server side. Spel like CS2 and Valorant don’t render everything in “real time” on the server—they store a rolling buffer of each player’s position and hitbox state at fixed tick intervals (128-tick in CS, roughly 40ms in Valorant). When you fire, the server takes your client’s reported delay (ping/2 accounts for round-trip), rewinds its simulation back to the exact moment your shot was registered on your machine, and recomputes what the target’s hitboxes were at that historical timestamp. The subtle part everyone underestimates is that it’s a double rewind: the server also factors in the victim’s delay, because the shot’s “arrival” is relative to both clients’ clocks. So a 60ms-delayed player firing at a
