Alright, let’s dig into this properly. I’ve been running HVCI in Memory Integrity mode on my rig and noticed consistent 4-6% FPS dips in competitive titles, but what’s really got me is the underlying SLAT mechanism. When the hypervisor intercepts page table walks through EPT/second-level translation, how exactly is the TLB miss penalty distributed? I understand the basic concept that every guest memory access now has to traverse the shadow page tables, but I’m struggling with the math on where the actual bottleneck lands. Does the overhead scale linearly with page fault frequency, or does it plateau once the translation cache warms up? And more importantly, does the cost hit read paths equally with write paths, or is it asymmetric given the dirty-bit tracking?

Second question: on the VBS side, how are we really thinking about the KMSI (Kernel Mitigation State Indicators) bit flips in terms of actual cycle cost? I keep reading that toggling these flags forces a pipeline drain, but I’ve never seen a solid breakdown of why. Is it purely the serializing nature of the CPUID-style barriers, or is there a more subtle interaction with branch prediction that compounds the penalty? If someone’s modeled the performance regression against a specific game engine’s memory access pattern, I’d love to see the numbers.
