So I’ve been reverse-engineering how anti-cheat systems fingerprint hardware for HWID bans, and I’m hitting some conceptual gaps around signature persistence. Here’s what I understand: a hardware ID is essentially a hash synthesized from a composite of device identifiers—NIC MAC, SSD serial numbers, and motherboard UUID—combined into a normalized value stored in the registry. But my question is about the entropy of that synthesis: when you’re dealing with a rolling hash across multiple volatile and non-volatile artifacts, how do systems weight transient identifiers like a dynamically reassigned MAC versus a permanent SSD serial that survives a full wipe? Is there a canonical weighting model, or is it purely vendor-specific?

Second, on virtualization masking—when you spoof a UUID or MAC inside a guest VM, the hypervisor layer intercepts certain SMBIOS queries, but the physical NIC and storage controllers still expose underlying hardware IDs to the OS. How do detection frameworks isolate which identifiers were virtualized versus which reflect true physical hardware? Are there timing or cache-consistency artifacts during the enumeration process that reveal spoofing attempts, and could those be modeled mathematically? I’m particularly interested in whether there’s an underlying information-theoretic bound on how much of a signature you can mask without tripping anomaly detection.

Here’s how these hardware identifiers actually get ingested into anti-cheat fingerprinting pipelines.

The NIC MAC address, SSD serial, and motherboard UUID are each read via OS-level APIs (WMI `Win32_N?
