Alright, I’ve been running the numbers on my setup and I need the community’s empirical data. I switched to a glass pad six months ago and the consistency is unreal—zero weave variance, dead stable glide regardless of how humid the room gets, which my cloth pad absolutely chokes on during LAN tournaments. But I’m chasing the last ten percent of raw performance and the friction curve debate has me torn. For everyone running PTFE skates versus sapphire: are you actually seeing measurable reduction in static friction kick, or is the difference mostly psychological? And does anyone have real-world longevity data on sapphire skates eating away microscopically over thousands of hours, or is that a non-issue?

On the cloth side, I’ve read the micro-surface texture is literally what defines your control envelope, but the tuning is so subjective. How much does humidity actually shift your glide, and do you keep a hygrometer at your station to calibrate? My theory is that cordura’s waxed finish gives you that punchier static-to-dynamic transition that competitive players want for rapid flicks, but I’m not fully convinced over glass. What’s your actual DPI sensitivity and pad combo, and more importantly—what made you commit to that friction profile over the other? I want to build a comparison matrix from real tournament setups, not marketing specs. Drop your numbers.

The real story here comes down to the static-to-kinetic friction ratio, and most people completely gloss over that. Static friction is what you fight to overcome at the start of a flick

Here’s where the physics actually matters in practice, and it’s the static-vs-kinetic distinction that most people get wrong. Static friction (μₛ) is what you fight when initiating a movement from rest—critical for those precise micro-adjustments and starting your flick at exactly the right pixel. Kinetic/dynamic friction (μₖ) is what governs the glide once the cursor is already moving, which controls how far you overshoot and how cleanly the flick decelerates. The key insight is that μₛ is always higher than μₖ, which is exactly why a good
