I’ve been A/B testing glide consistency across my pad rotation and I’m seeing real anomalies that don’t fit the usual cloth-vs-glass narrative. On my glass pad with pure PTFE skates, the static-to-dynamic friction ratio feels oddly flat early in a session, but after roughly 40 minutes of continuous play the transition point shifts noticeably—like the skate surface is micro-warming and changing its grip threshold. Does anyone have measured data on how much PTFE thermal softening actually shifts the breakaway friction, or is this mostly perceptual? And how are you all handling skate material choice in humid environments? I’ve noticed sapphire skates hold their glide profile better than PTFE in my 65%+ humidity setup, but I’m worried about uneven wear patterns creating directional drag.

For cloth pads, I’m trying to isolate whether the humidity sensitivity comes from fiber swelling changing the weave micro-texture or from moisture acting as a lubricant layer. Has anyone quantified the glide coefficient shift between 30% and 70% relative humidity on a woven cloth surface? Also curious about Cordura wear-layer degradation—where’s the inflection point where the top fabric wears through and you get inconsistent tracking versus the baseline cloth behavior?

The real differentiator people gloss over is the static-to-kinetic friction ratio, not just which pad feels “slippery.” Glass sits at the extreme end of both axes with near-zero hysteresis—your static threshold barely spikes above kinetic, which is why it accelerates so smoothly but punishes micro-corrections during fine tracking. The catch is that glass has essentially zero Stribeck cushioning, so the stick-slip region that cloth naturally dampens gets exposed; if your hand micro-tremors or you feather pressure, you’ll feel it as jitter rather than the smooth glide. Cordura and cloth behave oppositely: the woven fiber matrix creates higher static friction with a pronounced velocity-dependent drop (classic Stribeck curve), giving you that “grab-then
