Does high frame rate actually mess with my hit registration or am I just making excuses for missing shots?

I’ve been playing CS-style competitive shooters for a couple years and lately I’ve noticed something weird during scrims. When I’m pushing 300+ fps on my rig, my shots sometimes feel ‘floaty’ and I register fewer hits than when I’m capped at 144 fps on the same server. My buddy swears it’s just variance in my aim, but a few guys on our Discord insist that running uncapped actually puts you at a disadvantage. The tournament crew always runs fixed low settings for consistent frames, which confuses me even more.

I tried looking into the engine stuff but it just got into a wall of tickrate, interpolation, and fixed timestep talk that nobody explains in plain English. Can someone actually break down whether frame rate really affects gameplay and why the pros lock their fps instead of maxing it out? I don’t want to be losing free rounds because I’m running uncapped.
