I’ve been drilling directional gunshot localization in-game for the last few weeks, and I keep hitting a wall separating the Mach cone arrival timing from the muzzle report direction cue. When a shooter is firing a supersonic round from an angle, the crack and the bang arrive at slightly different times depending on the cone geometry, but in practice my brain is struggling to decouple which signal tells me “bearing” versus which tells me “range.” For those who’ve optimized their setups: do you read the azimuth off the muzzle report or the initial crack onset, and how are you handling the scenario where the shooter is moving such that the cone sweeps past you? I’ve noticed the angular estimation breaks down hard when the target is within the ~58-degree half-angle of the Mach cone.

On failure modes, I keep getting fooled by room reflections bouncing the crack signal off walls, which scrambles the triangulation for close-quarters engagements. Has anyone found a reliable way to filter out early reflections before they corrupt the directional read, or is this mostly a matter of learned pattern recognition? And for distance estimation, are you relying on the interaural time difference, the high-frequency roll-off, or the direct-to-reverberant energy ratio? Would love to hear how each of you handles the tradeoff between catching distant headshots and nailing the loud, close-range suppressor rounds that strip the supersonic signature entirely.

The fundamental thing people get wrong is assuming both cues point to the shooter—they don’t. The muzzle
