I’ve been digging into the DMA attack surface lately and want to hear from people who’ve actually dealt with this at the hardware level. On the offense side, how much have you seen the shift from legacy FireWire/1394 and external TB3 captures to internal PCIe DMA cards actually change the detection landscape? I’m curious whether people are still relying on direct memory writes via tools like the classic PCIe exploit kits, or if the community has standardized on something more surgical like scatter-gather IOMMU bypass techniques. And on the flip side, for anyone running systems with IOMMU enabled—do you see per-device grouping in the kernel page tables as airtight, or are there still edge cases where a rogue endpoint in an unisolated slot can reach the framebuffer or kernel buffers?

I’m also trying to figure out how viable PCIe config space scanning is as an early detection layer. If you’re hunting for DMA-capable devices, are you parsing BAR registers and the capabilities list for the ACS/ACS override bits, or going deeper into enumerating the ATU (Address Translation Unit) windows? What’s your take on whether these legacy workarounds are fully dead now that most firmwares default IOMMU protection on, or are people still finding paths around it?
