Here’s where I’m genuinely stuck trying to reconcile the marketing with the silicon behavior. When Thread Director migrates a game thread from a P-Core to an E-Core mid-frame, what’s the actual measured penalty for that cross-cluster move through the ring bus? I understand the theoretical latency of the mesh/ring topology, but I want to see the math on how much extra cycles you eat when a context switch crosses the big.LITTLE boundary versus staying on a homogeneous cluster. Is there a proven threshold where the E-Core’s higher IPC on bursty single-threaded work still loses to the migration tax?

Second question: when I pin background telemetry or streaming software to dedicated E-Cores, am I actually protecting the P-Core affinity mask, or is Thread Director going to override my manual core affinity within a couple frames? I’ve read that the scheduler treats pinned threads as “sticky” but I can’t find a primary source confirming whether this holds across power-state transitions. Can someone point me to documentation or share your own testing on whether manual pinning survives a real gaming session, or if it’s pointless against the dynamic scheduler?

Here’s the reality of what’s actually happening under the hood. Intel’s hybrid architecture pairs P-cores (full microarchitecture, out-of-order execution, higher clocks) with E-cores (in-order or compact OoO, latency-tolerant throughput cores), and the actual routing is handled by Thread Director in hardware—not the Windows scheduler alone. Thread Director polls performance counters (IPC, cache miss rates, stall reasons) on a ~10ms cadence and uses a heuristic model to classify each incoming thread as latency-sensitive or throughput-bound, then migr
