I’ve been digging into Hall Effect joysticks versus traditional potentiometers for competitive play, and I want to nail down the actual physics before committing to a build. Here’s where my understanding gets murky: with Hall sensors detecting magnetic field strength, the analog signal still has to route through an ADC, so how do you actually eliminate deadzone mathematically without introducing jitter in the neutral region? If you’re modeling the cycloid error of the stick’s circular travel, what’s the real-world impact of quantization error from a 12-bit versus 16-bit converter on the corners of the travel circle, where the error vector is largest?

Second question is about drift at the architectural level. Potentiometer drift comes from resistive layer wear, but Hall sensors theoretically have no physical contact—so what’s the dominant failure mode or noise source there? Is it thermal drift in the magnet’s field strength, or EMI contamination of the raw signal before filtering? If someone wanted to derive the circularity equation for a Hall stick’s output across all 360 degrees, what variables would you include, and how would you separate sensor nonlinearity from mechanical play in the ball socket? I’m looking for people who’ve actually modeled this, not just anecdotal drift reports.
