Color Calibration and Black eQualizer Gamma Curve Distortion: Historical Paradigm Evolution and Next-Gen Architectural Projections

[Tyler Reed]

Alright, let’s cut to the chase. I’ve been tuning black eQualizer settings across three different panels over the last six months, and I’m still not convinced the standard gamma curve approach is the right foundation for competitive play. When you crank shadow boost to pull enemies out of dark corners, you’re basically warping the gamma curve and crushing midtones—so where do you actually draw the line before you start losing detail in the shadows you’re trying to see? Has anyone done controlled A/B testing measuring actual frame-time impact versus the readability gains, or is everyone just going by feel?

Second question: how are you all balancing Delta E accuracy against the competitive need for boosted contrast? I’ve found factory-calibrated panels with Delta E under 2 look flat and muddy in tactical shooters, but custom tuning for readability tends to wreck color fidelity. For anyone running calibrated setups, what’s your workflow—LUT files, hardware calibrator, or software-only? And realistically, with Mini-LED and QD-OLED local dimming getting more aggressive, do you think hardware-level black boosting will eventually make black eQualizer obsolete, or is gamma manipulation here to stay?
