I’ve been running controlled A/B tests on binaural HRTF rendering versus virtual 7.1 upmixing in CS2 and Apex, and I’m seeing something odd in the data. On paper, binaural synthesis should win on spatial accuracy since it avoids the phase cancellation artifacts you get from summing channels through a virtualizer, but on my current setup the 7.1 headsets were landing headshots 12% more consistently in close-range engagements. My question is about the actual measurement methodology: are people calibrating their tests using impulse responses with fixed HRTF profiles, or are they letting the engine apply dynamic binaural processing? And has anyone isolated whether the discrepancy comes from the headphone’s own frequency response or from the HRTF mismatch on smaller ear shapes?

Second part is the hardware scaling angle. When you push virtual surround through a USB DAC versus a motherboard line-out, does the CPU overhead from the convolution stay flat, or do you see frametime spikes that actually hurt your input latency during firefights? I’m chasing sub-16ms frametimes and want to know if the audio post-processing is the culprit. What headsets, DACs, and sample rates are you all running, and did you measure any localization shift when switching between 44.1k and 96k on the same virtualizer?

Honestly, for competitive FPS titles, I’d lean hard toward quality stereo over either of those spatial tricks, but there’s nuance worth dissecting. Binaural/HRTF synthesis renders directional cues using head-related transfer functions, which can give you genuinely accurate elevation and front-back
