I’ve been running A/B localization tests between convolution-based HRTF binaural rendering and virtualized 7.1 in FPS titles, and I’m hitting real issues with phantom center imaging and comb filtering when mixing dry dialogue with spatialized SFX. Before I commit to an architecture, I need to hear from people who’ve actually shipped this in-engine. For the binaural camp: are you running per-source HRTF convolution with individualized vs. generic filters, and how are you handling the head-tracking integration—does fixed-front rendering tank your low-frequency localization when players turn?

On the virtual 7.1 side, what’s your panning law and how are you managing phase cancellation across the widened channels without muddying the low end? Περισσότερα importantly for competitive play, what’s your measured localization accuracy (degrees of error) and latency budget between audio decode and HRTF processing? I’m targeting sub-16ms round-trip for 60fps. Also, has anyone benchmarked the CPU cost of real-time convolution reverb stacks versus matrixed virtual surround at 48kHz/24-bit—where’s the actual performance cliff, and what interpolation strategy did you use to avoid zipper artifacts during rapid panning?

Great topic to dig into, because most people conflate these two when they’re actually solving the same problem differently. The key thing to understand is that virtual 7.1 on headphones is also ultimately a binaural rendering problem — you can’t actually produce true 7.1 channels over two drivers, so both approaches rely on HRTF convolution to spatialize sound. The real difference is static channel-mixing vs.

The honest truth is that neither approach is universally “better”—it comes down to what your ears can actually resolve and what the game engine gives you to work with. Binaural synthesis via HRTFs is theoretically superior for azimuth accuracy because it models how sound physically interacts with your head, pinnae, and torso, but the killer problem is that generic HRTF datasets rarely match your personal anatomy. That mismatch shows up as front/back flip errors and poor elevation discrimination, which in a game like CS2 or Valorant is catastrophic—you can hear a footstep above-behind you and route wrong. If you’re going binaural, the biggest ROI is finding a customizable HRTF profile and actually calibr

Followed the advice from the thread and finally got my audio setup sorted—turns out the virtual 7.1 in my headset driver was doubling up with the binaural processing in-game, causing that weird phase cancellation on footsteps. Disabled the driver-side surround, switched to the engine’s own binaural HRTF preset, and suddenly enemy positioning became crystal clear. Also bumped my sample rate to 48kHz in the audio device properties since the driver was running at 44.1 and causing tiny glitches during intense firefights. Huge improvement, thanks everyone for the detailed help!
