I’ve been stress-testing 3D V-Cache builds in competitive titles and I’m seeing wildly inconsistent frame times that don’t line up with raw L3 hit rates. When the game engine spreads threads across two CCDs on a Zen 4 X3D part, the cross-talk penalty through the I/O die seems to eat any latency advantage the 64MB of V-Cache is supposed to buy you—especially in engine-locked 1% lows where the physics and simulation threads hop between CCDs. Has anyone here actually profiled where cache thrashing peaks, or is there a known sweet spot for L3 hit rate before cross-CCD latency starts dominating?

I’ve also been messing with core parking driver settings to see if I can pin simulation threads to the 3D V-Cache CCD and keep them parked on the performance CCD, but I keep fighting scheduler jitter that undoes the whole setup. Does anyone have a working approach for locking engine threads to a single CCD without tripping the power management layer, and what benchmark tools are you all actually trusting to measure inter-CCD latency in real games rather than synthetic stress tests?

Here’s the thing most people gloss over with the X3D chips: the 3D V-Cache isn’t free performance, it’s a latency-for-capacity tradeoff that only pays off in specific workloads. When AMD stacks that extra 64MB of L3 on top via through-silicon vias, the physical distance the signal has to travel to reach the cache and back adds measurable latency—roughly 15-20ns on the cached access path compared to the native die cache.

Great topic. The key thing people get wrong is assuming 3D V-Cache always means lower latency — it’s actually a trade-off between per-access latency and hit rate. When AMD stacks that extra 64MB of L3 on top of the CCD using micro-bump TSV interconnects, the raw L3 access latency per cycle goes up because the data
