Less than a month before Final Fantasy XIV Fan Fest Tokyo descends on Japan, Square Enix has continued its steady drip-feed of information about the upcoming Evercold expansion, slated for release in January 2027. As the most significant update to the long-running MMORPG since A Realm Reborn reworked the world thirteen years ago, Evercold is introducing two new job classes, a fully customizable main story campaign, and what Square Enix calls an “evolved” combat system designed to address some of the game’s most persistent criticisms.
The studio has made clear that Evercold represents more than just another chapter in FFXIV’s ongoing saga. With Fan Fest Tokyo likely to deliver the final major wave of details before launch, players now have a substantial picture of what the expansion will change about one of gaming’s most enduring online worlds and its deeply entrenched systems.
A Tank Forged From Three Disciplines
Evercold arrives with two new job classes, and Square Enix has already unveiled the first: the bastion. This tank class wields a signature weapon called the skyltborg, which can be imagined as a gunblade reimagined once more into something that doubles as a shield while retaining a blade. In the class’s overview trailer, the skyltborg defends behind giant shields, strikes at range with bursts of aether fire, and closes in for melee combat—an amalgamation of melee damage, ranged damage, and tanking that Square Enix insists manages to function cohesively.

The second class remains officially unconfirmed, though it is known to deal ranged physical damage. Fan theories point toward a crossbow-based design, and a breakdown from PC Gamer makes a compelling case for the theory based on in-game evidence.
The Endgame Has Always Been Glamour
Beyond its storytelling, Final Fantasy XIV has long drawn players through an extraordinary depth of avatar customization, and Evercold expands that system considerably. New options include adjusting Au Ra horns, altering nose shadings, applying face paint, and freely customizing the color of eyes, hair, and skin tones.
The expansion also brings customization to animations for the first time, allowing players to give their teleport spell and other class-specific actions a distinctive look. The message from Square Enix is unmistakable: appearance has become as much a part of endgame content as any raid.
A Story You Actually Choose
Perhaps the most structural change in Evercold concerns how players experience the main quest. Historically, FFXIV’s expansions unfolded linearly, but the new expansion lets players decide where to take the narrative next, with NPC dialogue shifting to reflect those decisions.
In an example shared by Square Enix, a player who finishes one area can then visit any of three others—B, C, or D—in whatever order they prefer. To ensure everything progresses smoothly regardless of route, each area automatically balances its content relative to the player’s level, removing the risk of players stumbling into under- or over-leveled encounters.

Fighting The Grind
Square Enix has also targeted some of the grind that seasoned players have long complained about. Daily quests used to be required to amass the currency needed for higher-tier gear, but Evercold replaces them with a weekly system in which players select quests they can complete on their own schedule, earning activity points toward better equipment.
The expansion also tackles the burden of gearing multiple job classes at the level cap. Rather than farming separate sets of gear for every class, players will be able to reflect the highest item-level gear they own onto their other max-level jobs. Enhancements such as materia still require individual work, but bringing secondary classes up to speed should become markedly easier.
A Combat System Reimagined
One of the most common critiques of FFXIV in recent years is that its classes feel interchangeable—tank, melee, ranged, and healer abilities often read as variations on a handful of core actions. The new “evolved” combat system aims to restore individuality by streamlining each class’s ability set, which Square Enix notes will also ease the learning curve for newcomers.
“We want players to feel that their chosen job is truly distinct, while making sure newer characters are approachable and less overwhelming.”
Square Enix on the evolved combat system
The studio has not yet revealed the evolved forms of every class, but several breakdowns already exist online explaining how the new abilities and combos will function. For players who have grown attached to traditional playstyles, FFXIV will retain its previous approach through a “reborn” mode.
Looking Ahead
Beyond systems changes, Evercold updates the companion system so that chocobos can finally join dungeon parties as combat members—a change that lets players clear duties with just one other person. With Fan Fest Tokyo less than a month away and the expansion targeting January 2027, Square Enix is expected to reveal additional details in the coming weeks, including what may be the final major content drops before launch.
