Director Naoki Hamaguchi has revealed that the upcoming Final Fantasy VII Revelation is expected to require an installation of roughly 200 gigabytes, a figure that would make it one of the largest games ever released and a striking outlier among single-player role-playing titles. Speaking in a new interview while addressing questions about the game’s physical retail version, Hamaguchi confirmed the staggering storage demand, acknowledging community concerns while defending the technical necessity behind it.

The revelation comes shortly after Square Enix disclosed that Revelation would require substantial downloads alongside the two Blu-ray discs included in its boxed edition. While the studio has not yet published the game’s full system requirements on its official page, Hamaguchi offered a ballpark figure during his remarks, setting expectations for players preparing to reserve hard drive space well before launch.

A Storage Demanding of Its Own Right

The 200GB estimate places Revelation firmly in uncharted territory for the genre. For context, Final Fantasy VII Remake required 100 gigabytes of available storage on Steam, while its sequel, Rebirth, demanded 155 gigabytes. Taken together, the entire FFVII Remake trilogy will consume approximately 455GB across its three entries.

The contrast with the original PlayStation title is particularly stark. The 1997 classic shipped on three CDs but consisted of only about a gigabyte and a half of data—figures ranging from 1.3 to 1.7 gigabytes depending on the source. Modern hardware demands have transformed what was once considered an enormous installation into something nearly incomprehensible by comparison.

“Things are still getting worked out, but it’s probably going to be around 200GB of game. I understand there are a lot of opinions about this topic, but at the end of the day, the fact is we need to overcome the hardware to a certain extent.”

A Tough Ask Amid Storage Price Surges

The timing of this announcement carries particular weight. With storage prices having surged dramatically in recent years, a single-game installation of this magnitude represents a significant burden for many players. Call of Duty has long been infamous as a hard drive hog, though its titles tend to be more modular, allowing users to install only the modes they wish to play.

Even Destiny 2, one of the most storage-hungry games many players have had to accommodate, sits at around 150GB—still notably smaller than what Revelation is targeting. Yet Hamaguchi’s title may be among the rare few with enough star power and cultural significance to justify such a demand, riding on the back of a franchise that has redefined modern RPG production values.

Looking Ahead

As development continues, Square Enix has indicated that details surrounding the game’s storage requirements remain subject to change. Players hoping to minimize download sizes may want to monitor official communications as the launch approaches, particularly regarding how much of the 200GB can be installed from physical media versus requiring additional online downloads.

The studio appears confident that the technical demands are justified by the quality and scope of what it is delivering. Whether players share that confidence remains to be seen, but one thing is certain: anyone planning to own Final Fantasy VII Revelation at launch will want to start cleaning up their hard drive now.
