Final Fantasy Resonance has apparently been embraced by fans of the franchise — which is why it is surprising to learn that Square Enix’s leadership was reportedly opposed to the game’s creation.

Resonance is very much a callback to classic Final Fantasy in terms of gameplay and structure; some would go so far as to argue that it is exactly what the property needs at this point.

The recently released and highly rated RPG is built on the foundations of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius — the mobile gacha game that was shut down in 2024.

However, Resonance reworks entire systems to ensure that everything functions as you would expect of a traditional Final Fantasy adventure. After playing it myself for review, it is clear that the development team put a great deal of effort into essentially remaking Exvius.

But according to project producer Keisuke Nakashima, his higher-ups wanted a simple port of Exvius rather than the extensive adaptation that we ended up with.

He told Bloomberg (via Nintendo Everything): “Initially there was some resistance to the idea from Square Enix executives […] I didn’t want to go down that route. I wanted to create an original version for consoles that was a full-blown gameplay experience.”

The suggestion is that a straightforward port would have cost much less to produce. At the time of writing, we do not know how well Resonance has sold.

Still, I am glad Nakashima held his ground, because I am not even sure how an Exvius port would have worked in the first place. It certainly would not have hit like Resonance does.
