Starting with the less welcome news: Final Fantasy 14: Evercold has been pushed back. The silver lining, though it barely matters, is that the delay is only around a month, and a firm release date has now been set: February 23rd, 2027. It lands a little close to the season turning toward spring, which makes it seasonally ill-suited, but February is still winter, after all.
The expansion’s second new job has also been unveiled. Named Zephyr, it is a physical ranged DPS class that wields a crossbow and is accompanied by its own avian familiar to aid you in battle. It seems like a solid choice for players who’d rather keep their distance yet still deal damage. The bird companion you receive is a nice touch as well. I’d formally request that every other job gain a bird companion too—I don’t care whether it makes sense!
Most vexing of all, for me personally as someone who has only managed to play A Realm Reborn and doesn’t really have the time to slog through a staggering number of hours and expansions just to reach this one, was a preview of the Evangelion collaboration alliance raid, rendered in the style of the original anime’s post-credits “next episode” teaser reels. I love those giant robots and those feelings of melancholy, so please don’t make me push through all those expansions just so my Viera can dress up as Asuka or collect whatever loot ends up dropping.
In any case, don’t forget to mark your calendars for February 23rd. Be there or be, well, somewhere else, I suppose. I’m not your boss.
