Now, one of those games, Fable, has spoken candidly about its decision to delay its launch.
Avoiding the GTA 6 Shadow
Watching game developers navigate the uncertainty surrounding GTA 6’s release date has been a fascinating exercise in strategic maneuvering. It’s like watching a group of Marios trying to dodge a single, inevitable Whomph block. The new Fable game was originally slated for release this year, but it got pushed back into 2027 to avoid directly competing with Rockstar Games’ behemoth. While Xbox initially played coy about which title they were strategically avoiding, we now have confirmation that it was indeed GTA 6.
In a recent interview, Ralph Fulton, the director of Fable, shed some light on the decision-making process: “I think the rationale behind moving us out of October, the date that we were in previously, is pretty apparent to everybody. I feel great about that. I mean, I was really looking forward to shipping this game this year. I didn’t want to have to do another January 1 speech to the team about ‘this is the year we ship Fable,’ which I’m now going to have to do.” He continued, “But the rationale for it is absolutely sound. I’m glad that we’re avoiding that chaotic window.”
While the gaming calendar isn’t devoid of other major releases, Fulton acknowledged the elephant in the room: “We don’t run scared of other big games. We’re a big game ourselves. We hold ourselves to high standards. I’m happy to go toe-to-toe with a bunch of other games. There’s just one that I’m happy to avoid entirely.” This candid statement highlights the undeniable impact GTA 6 is expected to have on the gaming market.
