The upcoming RPG, Fable, has been generating immense hype, but a recent combat video released during Gamescom week sparked controversy online. Many players expressed disappointment and questioned the game’s quality after witnessing what appeared to be unresponsive enemies in the footage. Having now had hands-on experience with Fable, I can confidently say that the published video doesn’t accurately reflect my gameplay experience.

A Deeper Dive into Fable’s Combat

During Gamescom, I played two distinct builds of Fable, both crafted by the development team at Playground 游戏. In both instances, my primary weapon was a hammer, but I had access to different ranged options: a standard bow in the first build and a repeater crossbow in the second. Furthermore, each build offered entirely different sets of spells.

Cheri showcases the variety of weapons available in Fable, highlighting the hammer’s versatility despite its size.

The first loadout focused on maximizing damage output, with fire and lightning attacks readily available. The second loadout prioritized crowd control, featuring an upgraded spell that allowed me to levitate groups of skeletal enemies before slamming them back down to earth with devastating force.

While I found the hammer somewhat cumbersome, it certainly wouldn’t be my weapon of choice for a typical playthrough. However, the wide array of spells meant I primarily used the hammer to finish off enemies or occasionally charged up my heavy attack to send them plummeting over cliff edges.

Throughout my gameplay session, every enemy reacted appropriately to my attacks, and dodging, parrying, and deflecting felt responsive, well-timed, and satisfying. I encountered at least six different types of enemies during my brief hands-on experience with the game. These included wisps – ghostly skeletons that would burrow underground to summon undead hordes – as well as armored variants, long-range sniper versions, and regular skeletal warriors.

Cheri demonstrates a powerful spell used for crowd control in Fable, showcasing the strategic depth of the combat system.

Later on, I faced off against a boss with an eerie green lantern illuminating its skull. While the encounter became more challenging as hordes of enemies spawned around him, I never felt that my actions or attacks were inconsequential.

My experience with Fable has reinforced the importance of forming my own opinions about games, even when initial footage might not align with expectations. Despite the earlier combat video tempering my enthusiasm, I’m now more excited than ever for Fable to launch on February 23, 2027, for PC, Xbox Series X|S, and PS5.

When Cheri isn’t handling the site’s evergreen and guides content, you’ll probably find her mourning Destiny 2, building obscure structures in Minecraft, or saying “just one more run” while playing the latest roguelikes.
