Canadian game developer Behaviour Interactive, the studio behind the horror juggernaut Dead by Daylight, is aiming to capture player attention with their new live-service title, Exterminauts. This ambitious project blends the blue-collar charm of Ghostbusters with the intense action of Starship Troapers. While drawing comparisons to games like Helldivers 2, Behaviour Interactive has taken inspiration from Arrowhead’s approach by offering players opportunities to earn in-game currency, making Battle Passes obtainable through gameplay alone. However, for those short on time, a paid option will also be available.
A Generous Monetization Model
“We’re planning to release our first wave of live content roughly a month after launch,” explained creative director Vincent Regimbald. “Players won’t have to wait long for new experiences. We’ve also committed to providing advance notice about upcoming updates. Think of it as short-term ‘Warbond’-like Battle Passes, and payment is entirely optional. You can earn the in-game currency by completing daily and weekly challenges.”
Regimbald further elaborated that these Battle Passes will offer new cosmetic items and weapons, but emphasized that these rewards are often obtainable through regular gameplay. Similar to what’s found in Helldivers 2, premium currency fragments can be discovered on maps within Exterminauts, although accumulating enough of them will require a significant time investment.
Modding Your Way to Victory
The mods available in Exterminauts are also obtainable through gameplay, and Regimbald highlighted that these mods have the potential to significantly alter weapon performance. “Mods can add elemental damage to your shots, provide instant reloads, or even boost critical hit damage,” he explained. “You can also create combinations with the devices you use or specific weapons. We believe players will be able to tailor their playstyles through mod selection.”
Passive Abilities and Playstyle Customization
In addition to mods, Exterminauts features “emblems” and “badges,” which act as passive abilities that define your character’s class or playstyle. “You can focus entirely on devices, healing, or even ice damage,” Regimbald explained. “These emblems will influence your gameplay. For example, if you use an emblem focused on ice, enemies you freeze will explode for area-of-effect damage when shot.” The combination of mods and emblems promises a high degree of customization and strategic depth.
Early impressions suggest that the mod system is a welcome addition, encouraging players to engage with the game over extended periods. While not necessarily revolutionary, Exterminauts has the potential to carve out its own niche with its lighthearted action and chaotic co-op experience. The game is slated for release in 2027 on PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X|S.
