•Johnny Depp has undergone extensive makeup and prosthetic work for his role as the iconic character Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming film Ebenezer, revealed through an exclusive look timed to coincide with IGN Fan Fest.
The transformation, which involves detailed prosthetics, was so thorough that even Depp’s co-stars were struck by the result. “I’ll be honest, the first time I saw him in full makeup I did not recognize him,” said Trammell Tillman, who plays the Ghost of Christmas Present. “Johnny was really excited to play Scrooge in his own way.”
The film’s prosthetic designer Barrie Gower noted that Depp actively participated in shaping the character’s appearance. “Johnny really embraces the makeup process,” Gower said. “He’s suggesting things like moles. He wanted his chin a little longer, anything that we can add to the character.”
In addition to footage of the transformation, IGN exclusively revealed a new poster for Ebenezer, which features an up-close look at Depp’s Scrooge alongside Tillman’s Ghost of Christmas Present, the Ghost of Christmas Future (Robert Strange), and the Ghost of Christmas Past (Andrea Riseborough).
Depp is known for transforming himself for roles such as Captain Jack Sparrow in Pirates of the Caribbean and the Mad Hatter in Alice in Wonderland, a reputation his co-stars say he continues to build upon.
“I think he brings something unique to everything he does,” said Rupert Grint, who plays Bob Cratchit. “I think this is such a perfect role for him.”
Ian McKellen, who plays Marley, added: “Johnny is giving a performance the likes of which you’ve never seen before. But that’s what you expect with Johnny Depp, isn’t it? He’s full of surprises.”
Daisy Ridley, who plays Clara, said: “It’s Johnny doing what Johnny does best — these larger-than-life characters with a real human touch.”
Ebenezer arrives in theaters November 13.
