2024 has been an absolute feast for RPG fans, with heavy hitters like Metaphor: ReFantazio, Dragon’s Dogma 2, the sprawling Elden Ring: Shadow of the Erdtree, the stylish Persona 3 Reload, and the epic Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth all vying for our attention. It’s easy to understand if you haven’t had a chance to dive into Sega’s massive, 80-hour adventure through Honolulu in Like a Dragon: Infinite Wealth. This ninth mainline installment of the Yakuza / Like a Dragon series boasts an incredible ensemble cast drawing from across the entire franchise. Don’t let that intimidate you!

A Perfect Blend of Action and Humor

While Infinite Wealth might seem daunting for newcomers, it’s actually a brilliant distillation of the perfect blend of action, humor, and heart that has propelled this series from a cult classic to a bona fide blockbuster. And now, with a significant discount, there’s no excuse not to experience it! It’s currently marked down 75%, bringing the price down to just $17.49 until August 27th. Even better, if you’re an Xbox Game Pass Premium or Ultimate subscriber, it’s already included in your subscription. PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium subscribers can also enjoy it as part of their library.

A Vacation You Won’t Forget (Probably)

In Infinite Wealth, the legendary Kazuma Kiryu teams up with the enthusiastic newcomer Ichiban Kasuga on a quest to locate Ichiban’s long-lost mother. Their search leads them into an international conspiracy that delves into the darkest corners of organized crime and the highest echelons of government. As with any Yakuza game, the plot might not always make perfect sense, so just buckle up and enjoy the ride.

Your Ultimate Hawaiian Getaway

What truly sets Infinite Wealth apart is its incredible vacation simulator aspect. Okay, maybe most vacations don’t involve pummeling hordes of enemies in broad daylight, but hear me out! Whether you’re strolling along Waikiki Beach, checking out the clientele of various resorts, browsing for new sandals at a luxurious mall, or zipping around on a Segway through some of Honolulu’s more colorful backstreets, this game’s rendition of Hawaii is simply breathtaking. Like any Yakuza game, Infinite Wealth also features an absolutely staggering number of unique minigames, many of which cleverly incorporate the tropical setting.

From Burgers to Animal Crossing: A Minigame Paradise

Crazy Delivery, a playful homage to Sega’s soon-to-be-revived Crazy Taxi series, lets you deliver burgers and pizzas all over Honolulu for tips. Expect plenty of near misses and spectacular stunts as you race against the clock. Then there’s Dondoko Island, Yakuza’s take on Animal Crossing. Here, you transform a derelict island from a haven for seedy criminals into a five-star resort. With countless pieces of furniture to craft and stores to build, you could easily lose dozens of hours in this mode alone.

Sicko Snap is like Pokémon Snap, but instead of capturing charming creatures, you’re snapping photos of… well, let’s just say “enthusiastic” tourists in speedos while riding a tourist trolley. In the early game, it’s a fantastic way to get your bearings and learn the city layout – and somehow, managing to capture these guys jiggling their bits next to a dumpster or behind a food truck is consistently hilarious.

The game’s turn-based combat system also shines, thanks to its unique job system. Your party members can choose from over two dozen jobs, including Polynesian fire dancers and surfboard-wielding aquanauts! During your island getaway, you’ll square off against litigious tourists, musclehead thugs, a great white shark, and even a construction crane blocking the view. If you didn’t get to take a real vacation this summer, Infinite Wealth just might be the next best thing.
