Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has responded to enthusiasm from the cast of the Street Fighter movie about a crossover film, saying any collaboration should begin with a game. According to a report by Virginia Glaze for IGN, Boon wrote on Twitter/X: “Game first… then movie,” accompanied by a winky face emoticon.

The comments followed interviews Boon’s colleague conducted with the Street Fighter movie cast ahead of its October 16 release, in which several actors expressed interest in appearing alongside the Mortal Kombat films. Andrew Koji, who plays Ryu, told IGN: “That’d be sick.” Noah Centineo, who plays Ken, added: “I want more Street Fighter… if that’s Mortal Kombat, if that’s me kicking Thor in his face, you know?”

Andrew Schulz joked during the 2025 Game Awards that a crossover had been the real goal of his jab at the Mortal Kombat cast. The actors also floated the idea of a Marvel vs Capcom movie, though such a project is considered extremely unlikely.

“Game first… then movie.”

This is not the first time Boon has raised the prospect. In May 2026, he tweeted about wanting a Street Fighter guest character in a Mortal Kombat game, describing himself as a “huge fan” of the series.

A crossover between the two franchises was previously rejected. Former Street Fighter producer Yoshiniori Ono said in a 2019 interview that Capcom turned down a proposal for a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat, though he did not make the decision himself.

“It’s true that a proposal for a Street Fighter character in Mortal Kombat was rejected by Capcom… But it wasn’t me personally! There were many people at the company that felt that it wasn’t a good fit for our characters. I actually met Ed [Boon] at the Brazil game show and spoke to him personally about it. So it’s true — but I didn’t make the decision!”

Ono noted that Mortal Kombat is known for its crossovers while Street Fighter has had its own share of collaboration games over the years. Capcom’s stance may have shifted under new leadership; the company was enthusiastic about Yujiro Hanma joining Tekken 8 and appeared open to collaborating with Baki again, which partnered with Street Fighter 6 in 2023 and 2024.

The film rights situation has also changed. With Paramount and Warner Bros having merged, Skydance now owns the rights to both the Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter films, potentially removing some of the corporate obstacles that previously stood between the two franchises on screen.
