Well, folks, it seems the internet has spoken – and we’ve seen a sneak peek of EA’s upcoming Iron Man game. After unauthorized footage surfaced online on Friday, EA confirmed its authenticity, offering a tantalizing (and slightly frustrating) look at what’s in development. Let’s dive into what we saw.
A Glimpse Behind the Curtain
The leaked trailer, clearly labeled “Aug26 Test,” offers two and a half minutes of gameplay footage, showcasing both cinematic sequences and in-game action. We see Tony Stark soaring through what appears to be New York City, engaging in aerial combat against enemies both above and below. The footage also features a visit to the S.H.I.E.L.D. helicarrier as it gracefully drifts through the sky.
My initial reaction? “Yeah, I’m definitely playing that.” Even with the obvious signs of a work-in-progress build – lower-resolution textures, unfinished cutscenes – Iron Man’s flight mechanics look incredibly smooth and responsive. The combat appears to have considerable depth, offering a satisfying blend of ranged attacks and brutal melee options. Stark’s iconic suit is packed with gadgets, from rockets and cluster missiles to repulsor blasts. But he’s equally capable of dishing out some serious hand-to-hand punishment, including one particularly awesome move where he bursts forward and slams an enemy headfirst into a wall.
The trailer also hints at a suit customization system, which makes perfect sense given Tony Stark’s penchant for tinkering and upgrading his gear. While the character model appears similar to his MCU counterpart, it’s important to note that he wasn’t modeled after Robert Downey Jr. The game does borrow elements from the films, such as the holographic ringed close-ups of RDJ’s face.
What Does This Leak Mean?
The “Aug26 Test” label suggests this footage is relatively recent, and the presence of placeholder text for a release window indicates that EA likely had plans to kick off a full marketing campaign for the game. Considering Marvel’s Iron Man was announced back in 2022, it’s been in development for at least four years. Given how games often come together in the final stages of development, this footage could represent a build that’s much further along than initially perceived.
Marvel’s Iron Man was part of a larger suite of superhero titles planned for development at EA. However, not all of these projects are still active. The company’s Black Panther game, announced in 2023, has been reportedly cancelled. More recently, there have been reports of layoffs within the publisher following plans for restructuring. For now, at least, it seems Marvel’s Iron Man is unaffected by these changes.
