Electronic Arts producer Jim Vessella announced an upcoming remaster of Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, marking a revival for the space flight simulation series that defined much of ’90s PC gaming.
The revelation came during a retrospective panel at the Portland Retro Gaming Expo, where Vessella said he had unearthed the master tapes from Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger‘s production. According to reports, the producer told attendees that a 30th anniversary remaster is in development.

The project will reportedly remove outdated video compression and run at 60 frames per second, while incorporating community enhancements added after the game’s original release. Vessella also referenced “the Kilrathi Saga,” suggesting the remaster may bundle all three games from the original trilogy.

The announcement arrives more than two decades after Wing Commander‘s last major appearance in mainstream gaming. The franchise spanned five main entries, a dozen expansions, an ambitious Super Nintendo port, novelizations and an animated series since its debut in the early 1990s.
In Wing Commander III: Heart of the Tiger, players take on the role of pilot Christopher Blair, transferred to the TCS Victory amid instability on the Kilrathi homeworld. The game’s live-action cutscenes featured performances from Mark Hamill, Malcolm McDowell, Tim Curry, John Rhys-Davies and Ginger Lynn Allen.

The title is widely regarded by fans as the peak of the series, combining refined game design with some of the best FMV sequences in gaming.
The reveal at a retro expo stands out for an Electronic Arts announcement. EA has not historically been among the most nostalgic publishers, and Vessella was not directly involved in the development of the Wing Commander series. The franchise’s original creator, Chris Roberts, has led work on Star Citizen for over a decade.
