Alliance Arts, developer of Drunken Goddess Reflux, an anime Russian roulette game, has canceled its upcoming public demo, saying it fears generative AI could be used to replicate and release a clone before the title launches. Instead, the studio will hold closed online play sessions for a limited number of players.

According to a report by Darryn Bonthuys for GameSpot, Alliance Arts instead plans to hand out demo keys and collect feedback through its group Discord rather than open the demo publicly. The studio also said it cannot properly enforce restrictions on posting and streaming footage from the game.

“We sincerely apologize for the short notice to everyone who was looking forward to it,” the developer wrote online. “We’re concerned that the demo’s content could be used to quickly imitate or replicate the game’s presentation and gameplay with AI or other tools, and that such works could be released before our launch.”

The studio’s concerns reflect a wider problem on Steam. The upcoming Needle in a Haystack was announced in August, and after a clip of its deliberately tedious gameplay went viral—players genuinely search for a needle in a haystack—clones quickly appeared online. A search reveals several games with similar themes released within weeks of each other.

The report says AI-assisted games have been appearing more frequently on Steam, though disclosure text indicating the use of agents like Claude and ChatGPT is rarely present. A fast turnaround, near-identical gameplay, and artwork with a telltale yellow filter suggest the technology played a heavy role in producing clones.

The article notes that Claude 5.5 makes it easier than ever to decompile a game into code playable within a browser, raising concerns that someone could use demo code to generate a copy and sell it on Steam.

Meccha Chameleon also has its fair share of copycats, as shortly after release, a wave of new games copied its hide-and-seek-with-bad-art formula.

The Drunken Goddess Reflux demo cancellation comes just before Steam Next Fest this month—an event the article describes as having become a dumping ground for demos where titles could be buried under thousands of others. The game is currently one of the top 100 most-wishlisted on Steam.
