Drunken Goddess Reflux, an anime gambling horror game in which players play Russian Roulette with a demon, is abandoning its planned free demo. The developers say they are pulling the demo ahead of next week’s Steam Next Fest because generative AI could quickly replicate it.

According to a report by Kotaku, developer Alliance Arts announced today on Steam that it will cancel the public release and hold a closed play session instead. “We have decided to cancel the public release of the Drunken Goddess Reflux demo, originally scheduled for Monday, October 19, and will instead hold a closed play session for a limited number of participants,” Alliance Arts wrote in an update on Steam today.

“We sincerely apologize to everyone who was looking forward to the demo for making this change so close to the planned release date.”

The team had originally intended to ship the demo with restrictions barring players from streaming it or sharing gameplay videos online, but said enforcing those limits would have been impractical given the size of its staff. “We are concerned that, based on the content of the demo, works imitating or replicating this game’s presentation and gameplay could be quickly produced using AI or other tools and released ahead of the game’s launch,” they wrote.

Drunken Goddess Reflux, which was only revealed for the first time earlier this year, already has more than 25,000 followers on its Steam page and is ranked in 65th place among the top wishlisted games on Valve’s storefront. The game appears to be a vaguely Doki Doki Literature Club!-style take on horror gambling titles like Buckshot Roulette, though Alliance Arts clearly believes its combination of art style, mechanics and tone is worth protecting.

The decision arrives as AI tools such as Claude Opus have disrupted the gaming world this month, with vibe-coded ports, mash-ups and prototypes flooding social media. Even before those developments, users had become skilled at taking whatever was hot on Steam and quickly ripping it off, feeding a downstream flood of Steam knock-offs on Roblox. It remains unclear how much this is directly affecting the economics around successful games on Steam, though it is clearly a major concern.

Alternatively, Alliance Arts may have concluded that Steam Next Fest itself has become too overcrowded with junk demos, making it easier to stand out by simply not offering a free demo. In that case, the move would be mission accomplished.
