The internet is ablaze with a surprising controversy: some spouses are reportedly considering breaking up over the relationship mechanic in Grand Theft Auto 6. Yes, you read that right. The upcoming installment from Rockstar Games features two protagonists, Jason and Lucia, whose relationship players can actively nurture, leading to real-life drama for some couples.

The “Relationship” Controversy

Following the release of extended gameplay footage and previews for Grand Theft Auto 6, a wave of concerned partners have taken to social media platforms like TikTok to express their discomfort with the game’s relationship mechanic. The core issue? Players can build relationships with one of the protagonists, engaging in activities like dates, texting, and even implied intimacy. For some, this is perceived as a form of infidelity.

“In absolutely no human way is my fiancé playing GTA 6,” declared TikToker Shelby Haas. “You literally have to maintain a relationship with a girl [in] the video game and text her, and she’ll get mad if you don’t text her back. You have to take her on dates and you can have [sex] with her. […] Don’t let your boyfriend or fiancé or husband play GTA 6.”

Her fiancé, Alex Eubank, responded by stating that he respects her feelings and has decided not to play GTA 6. “Do I want to play GTA 6? A thousand percent,” he said. “But if it bothers my woman and I’m supposed to sacrificially serve her, then I will do so.”

Is It Just a Game?

While some are dismissing the controversy as overblown, others have drawn parallels to cheating in real life. The debate has also sparked comparisons to games like The Sims, where players routinely create virtual families and engage in simulated intimacy without causing such widespread alarm.

Rockstar’s Perspective

Rockstar has been careful to emphasize that the relationship mechanic is optional. Players are not required to engage with it, and those who choose not to will still experience a compelling narrative. However, for players who embrace the role-playing aspect, the game offers opportunities to deepen the connection between Jason and Lucia.

“When you bring them together, it feels like you’re a steward of their relationship,” said Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson in an interview with IGN. “But this is something we did not know when we started, and it really had to be something we felt our way through.”

Nelson also acknowledged the importance of physical intimacy in a relationship and hinted that Rockstar is exploring ways to incorporate that aspect into GTA 6 responsibly.

A History of Controversy

Rockstar has a history of pushing boundaries with its games, including explicit content. In Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, an interactive sex mini-game was initially included but ultimately cut due to concerns about the game’s rating and potential legal repercussions. While it’s unlikely that GTA 6 will feature anything quite as controversial, the debate surrounding the relationship mechanic highlights Rockstar’s ongoing commitment to pushing boundaries and exploring mature themes in its games.
