Discord has begun rolling out its long-delayed “global age assurance” policy today, marking the culmination of a contentious rollout that the messaging platform promised to postpone for months. The “Safer for Teens, Same Discord for Adults” initiative, which first surfaced in February alongside a “teen-by-default” settings overhaul, had drawn swift backlash and prompted users to seek alternative chat services before Discord agreed to defer implementation to the second half of 2026. Now, with just a few months left in the year, the day has arrived: the company is activating its age-grouping system across the platform to restrict adult content for younger users.
In a new blog post outlining how the policies work, Discord CTO and co-founder Stanislav Vishnevskiy stressed repeatedly that the vast majority of users will not be affected. According to the company, roughly 90% of users will not be asked to confirm their ages, as the system relies on automated signals rather than manual verification. Discord is automatically placing users into various age groups “using account signals, like how long your account has existed and the kinds of servers you’re part of. We use multiple account signals to determine age groups at an accuracy level matching what’s possible with biometrics. No single server determines your age group, and we don’t look at your messages, calls, or other content to decide which age group you’re in.”
Users can check their assigned group by visiting the “Account Status” page in their user settings. As Vishnevskiy noted, the new settings will be launched throughout this week, so players may not see anything new in their settings right away.
What the Age Groups Actually Change
Depending on the age group Discord has sorted a user into, the way they interact with the app may shift. Nothing changes for adults, while teens will have certain content restricted. Users in the “unconfirmed” group will also face restrictions on adult content until they confirm their age. The age settings are framed by Discord as protective measures for teen users, and the differences are most visible in how messages, content, and profile visibility are handled.
For those in the teen age group, messages from non-friends will be routed to a message requests inbox so they can be reviewed first, and an alert will fire before accepting a friend request from someone with whom the user shares no mutual friends or small server. Sensitive images flagged by Discord’s content filters will be blurred or blocked, and age-restricted servers, channels, and bot commands will become inaccessible. Additionally, a teen’s full profile details and activity—such as what game they’re playing—will be visible only to friends and people in smaller servers. Users in the unconfirmed group face the same restrictions, except their profile details and activity remain visible to friends and people in all servers they’re part of.
Verification Methods and a Skeptical Community
Back in February, Discord promised more age verification options beyond a video selfie or sharing an ID, and detailed them in the same blog post, assuring users that “the data you provide to us and our vendors is only ever used to determine your age group, so you can pick whichever option you’re most comfortable with.” New options include inputting credit card information, letting the Apple App Store and Google Play Store share a user’s age group—rather than an exact birthdate—with Discord, using Google Wallet to confirm age via an ID pass, or setting up an AgeKey that can be used across various platforms.
Users were understandably wary of handing over sensitive data to Discord or any third-party company to verify their age in February, and that skepticism appears to remain intact today. Trust in the company has been rocky ever since Discord was connected to a security breach of user data last fall. “Surely any selfie or ID photo people upload will be securely stored and not hacked, oh wait…” reads a top comment on Reddit. “The day any program asks me for some kind of ID verification is the day I stop using that program,” another user says. “Dystopian bullshit designed to siphon and sell our data,” one user bluntly describes the situation.
An FAQ at the end of the blog addresses some of these concerns, including the privacy and protection of user data. Discord has brought on a new age assurance vendor, k-ID, and is essentially passing the responsibility to it and other third-party vendors. “No matter which vendor you use to confirm your age, we won’t receive your name, your credit card, your ID, or a scan of your face. Instead, the information is processed by vendors like k-ID, who then pass us a signal containing your age group. The vendors are then required to delete your uploaded data immediately after confirming your age group,” Discord says. “If you choose to use facial age estimation, know that we’ve set a hard requirement for vendors: any partner offering facial age estimation must run it entirely on your device, so your biometric data never leaves your phone.”
Looking Ahead
Time will tell whether these controversial changes affect Discord’s bottom line or trigger a mass exodus of users. As noted, players will start seeing their age group placement in their user settings in the coming days, giving the community a clear read on how the rollout is landing in practice. The next few weeks will be telling for the platform as users adjust to the new restrictions and weigh whether the trade-off for a safer teen environment is worth the friction for adult users.
