Diablo 5 Set to Launch With More Classes Than Any Game in the Franchise’s History

Blizzard Entertainment is preparing Diablo 5 to become the class-heavy title of its own franchise, with game director Joe Shely confirming during a BlizzCon 2026 panel that the upcoming action RPG will ship with more playable classes than any previous entry in the series. The announcement arrived as part of Blizzard’s opening ceremony at the event, which followed the game’s surprise reveal and locked-in Spring 2029 release window. During the session, Shely walked fans through three of Diablo 5’s launch roster: the Monk, the Demon Hunter, and a brand-new Plague Knight class.

“Diablo 5 is going to launch with more classes than ever before,” Shely said. “And I don’t just mean more classes than another Diablo game at ship. I mean more classes total.”

That statement points toward an ambitious target of nine or 10 distinct classes available from day one, depending on whether the count includes Diablo 4’s own newly revealed Amazon class. The decision to front-load such a large roster represents a deliberate departure from the series’ tradition of introducing new classes gradually across multiple expansions.

A Roster Built for Nostalgia and Discovery

Shely explained that the expanded lineup was designed with returning players in mind, allowing veterans to recognize familiar archetypes while still encountering fresh interpretations. In a group interview attended by GameSpot at BlizzCon, he emphasized how the approach bridges generational gaps between entries.

“What that does…it allows us to, if you started playing Diablo in Diablo 3, you probably know the Demon Hunter, and you can jump into Diablo 5 and have an experience that’s familiar and new at the same time,” Shely said. “It’s a new representation of the class. It’s going to be different, but you’re still going to have twin crossbows. We’re going to pay off that nostalgia you have and that feeling of what that experience was like. Having a lot of classes lets us do that in a way we haven’t been able to do before. It also affords us the opportunity to explore new classes like the Plague Knight.”

The inclusion of the Demon Hunter is particularly notable given its storied place in the franchise’s history as one of the original classes introduced in Diablo 2. By reimagining it for Diablo 5 while retaining signature elements like twin crossbows, Blizzard appears to be honoring long-time fans even as it pushes the series toward uncharted territory with entries such as the Monk and Plague Knight.

The Future of Diablo 4

With development on Diablo 5 in full swing, Blizzard also confirmed that Diablo 4 will not receive new expansions going forward. The title will continue to evolve through seasonal content updates rather than major expansion releases, marking a structural shift for the live-service portion of the franchise.

The most recent installment of this model arrives with Season of Hell’s Legacy, which goes live on September 15 and features the return of Deckard Cain. The iconic Horadrim guide from previous Diablo games will task players with confronting echoes of the Prime Evils, including a battle against Diablo himself.

This content strategy suggests Blizzard intends to keep Diablo 4 relevant through recurring seasonal cycles while it channels its creative resources toward the larger Diablo 5 launch. The emphasis on delivering substantial new material at release rather than spreading it across expansions reflects a broader industry trend of prioritizing day-one value for players entering a major title.

Looking Ahead

As BlizzCon 2026 drew to a close, the Diablo 5 panel left fans with a clear sense of what lies ahead. The Spring 2029 release window gives Blizzard ample runway to refine the game through beta testing and community feedback before launch. With three classes already detailed and a stated goal of nine or 10 at ship, the franchise is positioning itself for its most expansive debut yet.

The decision to reveal multiple classes simultaneously also signals confidence in the direction of Diablo 5’s design philosophy. By combining familiar archetypes with innovative new entries like the Plague Knight, Blizzard aims to satisfy both veterans seeking continuity and newcomers drawn to fresh experiences. As development continues, the full class roster and additional gameplay details are expected to emerge in the months leading up to BlizzCon.

For now, one thing is certain: Diablo 5 is set to redefine what a franchise launch can offer when it comes to sheer class variety, promising an experience that honors the series’ legacy while boldly stepping into new territory.
