I had the same concerns when I first tried it, but it’s a testament to the quality that it overcomes the baggage. This is due to his brilliant writing, which is on par with – if not better in some moments. The star of the show is Hershel, aka Cascade, a spy sent to the city of Portofiro on one final mission. Genre conventions would have you believe that Cascade is some kind of super-spy who is a master of deception, but that’s not exactly the case: she’s a total loser.
The power of the story comes from the fact that Hershel’s last great mission ended in disaster. Unfortunately, she cannot complete her new mission without regaining the trust of several of the spies she betrayed in this operation. This basic idea transforms a traditional spy story into a personal reckoning. You embark on a tour of apologies as you explore Portofiro, trying to make amends with the people you hurt while recruiting them for another risky mission with far-reaching political implications.
This requires a certain amount of manipulation, and that’s what makes such a tragic comedy of misunderstandings. As much as Hershel sincerely wants to ask for forgiveness, that noble desire for forgiveness is hindered by a job that requires her to lie to the people she’s about to apologize to. Every successful dice roll hurts as you fight your way to salvation through lies; and every failed dice roll is an amusing reminder that Hershel is no James Bond.

With an emotionally complex story driven by risky, high-stakes RPG decisions, every decision you make will be remembered. I’m still thinking about my game round, which, if I’m being honest, ended in total disaster. I can’t help but remember every decision and question where it all went wrong.
