Get ready to revisit Geralt’s world! After an incredible 11 years since the original release, CD Projekt Red has finally shown off the first footage of “The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past,” a new expansion that promises to delve deeper into the lives of familiar characters. This isn’t just more content; it’d be a chance to explore a previously unseen corner of the Continent and uncover secrets long hidden.
A Journey to Letten
The expansion transports us to Letten, a picturesque countryside far removed from the political turmoil that often plagues Geralt’s adventures. However, tranquility is deceptive. Shortly after his arrival, Geralt’s friend Dandelion mysteriously disappears, setting off a quest that quickly escalates beyond a simple search.
In “Songs of the Past,” we meet Dandelion’s family and gain insight into his upbringing. During a hands-on demo, I witnessed Geralt acclimating to this new region, interacting with Dandelion’s extended family (including a cousin and grandmother), and beginning to unravel the secrets of Letten. Even from this brief glimpse, it’s evident that CD Projekt Red has maintained its signature writing quality, cutscene direction, and character development.
A Collaboration of Titans
The expansion is a collaborative effort between CD Projekt Red and Fool’s Theory, a studio founded in 2015. While known for original titles like The Thaumaturge and contributions to games such as Silent Hill 2, this partnership marks a significant moment for both studios.
Jakub Rokosz, CEO of Fool’s Theory, shed light on the development process. “This is a completely original story,” he explained. The initial concept was conceived years ago within CD Projekt Red by Ola Motyka and Philip Weber, but due to various circumstances, it had to be put on hold. Years later, the project resurfaced, and Fool’s Theory joined forces with CD Projekt Red to bring “Songs of the Past” to life.
Deeper Dive into Dandelion
While drawing inspiration from Andrzej Sapkowski’s novels, the expansion focuses on a deeper character study of Dandelion. Despoina Anetaki, senior quest designer at CD Projekt Red, emphasized that the goal was to explore Geralt and Dandelion’s close relationship, something often overlooked in the original game due to other narrative priorities.
“We wanted to give Dandelion a more fleshed-out character,” Anetaki added. “In the books, he engages in philosophical conversations with Geralt, and we wanted to bring that depth to the game.”
Rokosz highlighted Dandelion’s role as a counterpoint to Geralt’s seriousness, emphasizing the importance of exploring their dynamic. “The Witcher is all about morality and grey areas,” he said. “We wanted to explore how Dandelion complements Geralt in that regard.”
A Bromance for the Ages
CD Projekt Red has stated that “Songs of the Past” will be similar in scope to “Blood & Wine,” offering approximately 15 hours of content. This promises ample time to delve into Dandelion’s character and explore his relationship with Geralt.
“Dandelion is one of my favorite characters,” Rokosz smiled. “He’s a lighthearted comedic relief, but also deep and caring. He wouldn’s stick around with the Witcher through all those dangerous adventures if he didn’t care for him.”
Anetaki added that this expansion offers a callback to themes of family present in the original game, but explored in a different way.
“We always did a lot of romances in The Witcher 3,” Rokosz chuckled. “But there was never any room for a bromance… until now.”
“The Witcher 3: Songs of the Past” is slated for release sometime in 2027, promising a return to the world we know and love with a fresh perspective on familiar characters.
