Cyberpunk 2077 Reaches Biggest Steam Player Peak Since Phantom Liberty Release

Almost six years after launch, Cyberpunk 2077 still has a healthy player base, especially with a new anime spin-off driving people to the Night City source material. The second season of Edgerunners launched last week alongside a beefy update for Cyberpunk 2077, and unsurprisingly, PC player numbers have spiked.

At the time of writing, Cyberpunk 2077 player numbers had surged to 187,215 players on PC via Steam alone. That’s the biggest peak since October 2023, when the game received the substantial Update 2.0 and the Phantom Liberty expansion. This new tick in players is likely being experienced on other PC platforms where the game is available (like GOG and the Epic Spel Store), as well as on multiple consoles like PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2.

With a new update that adds dual-wielding, new cosmetics, customizable cyberware fashion, even more digital tourism, and a new story mission linked to Edgerunners, it’s no wonder that player numbers are climbing again. You also can’t discount Edgerunners’ impact, as the Netflix anime series is likely driving an influx of new players.

The first season of Edgerunners is credited with playing a major role in Cyberpunk 2077’s revival after its infamous December 2020 launch, and Edgerunners Season 2 probably makes a good case for returning to the game. CD Projekt Red has also discounted Cyberpunk 2077: Ultimate Edition by 70% on Steam, so the entry price is pretty cheap right now.

That increased foot traffic is even bigger this time: after Edgerunners Season 1 launched, Cyberpunk 2077 player numbers on Steam peaked at 136,724 in September 2022.
