CD Projekt Red has confirmed that its upcoming Cyberpunk film will not be a direct adaptation of the video game. “At this point, we can only say that we definitely don’t want to make a film adaptation of the game,” CEO Michał Nowakowski told Polish outlet PAP Biznes. “We want to tell a story in the world of Cyberpunk, but it won’t be a one-to-one translation of the game’s story,” according to a report by gamer24h_polygon.

The studio is following the approach it took with Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, the Netflix animated series made in partnership with Studio Trigger, the Japanese studio behind Kill la Kill and Little Witch Academia. The series tells an original story set in the world of Cyberpunk. It was directed by Studio Trigger co-founder Hiroyuki Imaishi and co-written by CDPR franchise creative director Bartosz Sztybor alongside Masahiko Otsuka and Yoshiki Usa, with a second season returning on Oct. 20.

An original story, not a remake

Beyond its standalone narrative, Cyberpunk: Edgerunners helped rehabilitate Cyberpunk 2077‘s image after a troubled launch. The game sold millions of copies following years of hype, but a flawed console release and numerous PC problems damaged CDPR’s reputation. Released in 2022 to widespread praise, the series drew attention back to its source material, which had changed significantly over years of reworks and bug fixes.

A movie based on the game could once again bolster its player base.

What else is known about the Cyberpunk film?

Details about the upcoming film’s cast and crew remain limited, but previous reports indicate producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached to the project. He is currently working on a new Transformers live-action movie with Steven Spielberg and Michael Bay at Paramount Pictures. Bonaventura has previously executive produced video game adaptations, including 2015’s Dead Rising: Watchtower and 2019’s Doom: Annihilation.
