Forget everything you think you know about sci-fi. Director Agnieszka Smoczynska has conjured something truly unique with her new film, “Hot Spot,” a mind-bending journey into a world where cybernetic enhancements meet ancient ruins and the line between reality and hallucination blurs. It’s less a straightforward narrative and more an immersive experience designed to provoke thought and evoke emotion.
A World Unlike Any Other
“Hot Spot” plunges viewers into a dystopian future populated by cyber witches, grotesque bloodworm creatures, characters sporting retrofuturist ’80s attire, desolate landscapes, remnants of ancient Greek civilization, and an all-powerful AI known as “The Head.” This AI has effectively enslaved humanity, making them dependent on technology for survival. At its core, the film presents a detective mystery, but Smoczynska masterfully avoids conventional storytelling, opting instead to create a visually stunning and emotionally resonant experience.
Noomi Rapace delivers a captivating performance as Rana, a rebellious figure who refuses to connect to the system. However, this is far from a typical sci-fi heroine role; Rapace imbues Rana with a depth and complexity that elevates the film beyond genre conventions. The visuals are both vivid and unsettling, creating an atmosphere of constant tension and unease.
“Hot Spot’s not about following the plot,” director Agnieszka Smoczynska told Polygon. “It’s rather to experience this world and to ask the question about this world, and to ask the question about our world here, and also what defines us.”
The Genesis of a Dystopian Vision
The film’s unique vision is rooted in a collaboration between Smoczynska and long-time collaborator Robert Bolesto, the writer behind her critically acclaimed 2015 mermaid horror film, “The Lure.” Bolesto initially pitched Smoczynska with “a story about a witch in a refugee camp,” a concept that resonated deeply due to the unfolding refugee crisis in Europe. However, the script evolved to incorporate anxieties surrounding fake news, deepfakes, and artificial intelligence – themes that were prescient even before the rise of ChatGPT.
“[Robert] captured the DNA of the now, of our current world,” Smoczynska explains.
Visualizing Fear and Love
Smoczynska aimed to translate modern anxieties into a visually arresting language. She describes “Hot Spot” as a “very metaphorical” and “very poetic” story, exploring themes of AI, climate change, and war, but also delving into more intimate fears: “the fear for our beloved ones, for our children.” The key, she says, was to “juxtapose this fear with the love and tenderness.”
Smoczynska’s initial inspiration came from her protagonist, Djonny, played by Andrzej Konopka. She began developing the characters through drawings, collaborating with animator Tomek Popakul to visualize Djonny and Rana before fleshing out the broader visual world. The film’s unsettling landscape was captured in Greece, including the abandoned Elinikon airport, a location that once housed a real refugee camp. The country’s rich history and ancient associations further enhanced the film’s thematic resonance, suggesting a civilization on the brink of collapse.
Watching “Hot Spot” is less like experiencing a traditional narrative and more akin to contemplating a surreal collage in a museum – it’s cohesive but not always easily digestible. For Smoczynska, this ambiguity isn’t a flaw; it’s an intentional choice that invites viewers to engage with the film on a deeper level. She spent five years immersed in these characters and this story, striving to discover not just what happens next, but “how to tell the story in terms of the visual narration.”
“I also am very interested in exploring the language of the cinema,” she says.
While many filmmakers claim a similar artistic ambition, Smoczynska is one of the few who can truly embody that statement. “Hot Spot” is now playing in select theaters across the U.S., offering viewers a unique and unforgettable cinematic experience.
