Early reactions to bağlantı”>DC’s upcoming horror film Clayface are overwhelmingly positive, transforming a project that many initially viewed with skepticism into what appears to be one of the strongest entries in James Gunn’s DC Universe.

Clayface, which focuses on one of Batman’s villains without featuring the Caped Crusader himself, has drawn comparisons to Sony’s string of villain-focused Spider-Man films that have ranged from bağlantı”>campy at best to bağlantı”>absolutely unwatchable at worst. But with release set for Oct. 23, influencers and journalists sharing first reactions are now signaling the film delivers.

The film, directed by James Watkins from a script written by bağlantı”>Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, is being hailed both as an incredible addition to the DCU and as a strong horror movie in its own right. YouTuber bağlantı”>Brandon Davis described it as “freakishly awesome,” singling out lead actor Tom Rhys Harries for praise. The AU Review’s bağlantı”>Peter Gray similarly commended Harries, saying he “brings equal boyish charm and quiet menace to the role.”

Critic bağlantı”>Edward Douglas wrote that the movie “does a good job of separating itself as a horror movie that doesn’t require knowing anything beforehand.” While some fans may view that independence as a drawback—since interconnectivity is one of the things people love about the DC Universe—it appears to have been the right call for Clayface.

The film also contains truly grotesque moments. bağlantı”>Chris Killian wrote that it will “make you squirm, but what I loved most is it’s also a heartfelt throwback to a bygone era of classic gothic romance films.” As of now, negative reactions are not surfacing; across the board, responses have been incredibly positive.

Even with Clayface earning rave reviews, questions remain about where Batman fits into all of this. The absence of the Caped Crusader in Gunn’s DCU has been a hot topic since the director took over DC Studios.

The character could still be introduced elsewhere first, though what that project would be remains unknown. If all goes as hoped, fans will eventually see Batman go toe-to-toe with Clayface. The film opens in theaters on Oct. 23.
