Charting New Territories in Crimson Desert
During Sony’s recent State of Play showcase, Pearl Abyss unveiled the first major expansion for Crimson Desert, titled “Charting the Unknown.” This DLC promises a bold new direction for the RPG, blending seemingly disparate genres and vibes into a unique gameplay experience.
“Reclaim power and reach beyond—into the unknown,” reads the official synopsis. “The story of Pywel continues in Crimson Desert: Charting the Unknown, as Kliff, Oongka, and Damiane set out to discover their purpose and shape their futures. However, as turmoil unfolds around them, each must fight to forge a path through the trials ahead. Join them on a new adventure and discover what new possibilities await across Pywel.”

So, what exactly can we expect from this ambitious DLC? The trailer offers a tantalizing glimpse into the chaos to come. We’re teased with a “hidden land” beyond the familiar crimson desert, a place where ancient witches sense “whispers of darkness steadily growing stronger.” Then, in a jarring but intriguing shift, we see Kliff seemingly building a house and customizing its furniture.
The trailer then descends further into madness: Kliff proposes to a witch lady, transforms into a pirate captain, rides a majestic dragon, and even dives into the ocean with scuba gear and a jetpack! We catch glimpses of a massive metal galleon, and witness a character seemingly walking on water like an anime deity. The DLC also features a variety of animal-themed mechs, including dragons, squids, and crabs, all armed with laser beams.
The “Charting the Unknown” DLC is slated for release on October 15th. As a special pre-order bonus, players will receive early 20th-century scuba diving gear to explore the underwater world in style.
If there’s one overarching theme to this avalanche of seemingly unrelated elements, it’s that the DLC appears to involve some sort of rift in time and space. This could explain the eclectic mix of steampunk technology, galleons, medieval cities, and futuristic robots. Or, perhaps, it’s simply Crimson Desert embracing its wonderfully wacky personality. Only time will tell! We’re eagerly anticipating diving into this new chapter next month to uncover all the secrets that await.
