Control Resonant’s GOTY Bid Hinges on More Than Just Its Gameplay

Control Resonant, the latest title from Finnish developer Remedy Entertainment, is positioning itself as a contender for Game of the Year 2026 at The Game Awards, though analysts suggest its chances may rest as much on the studio’s reputation as on its merits. Released earlier this year, the game has drawn generally warm reviews and a Metacritic score higher than its predecessor, Control, but faces stiff competition in its category. What makes the race interesting is not only how the game plays, but the goodwill surrounding the developer — a reputation for artistic ambition and press-friendly engagement that could quietly tip the scales among the voting jury.

The reception to Resonant has been mixed-to-positive overall. Most outlets have praised its refined mechanics and atmospheric design, and the aggregate score has edged ahead of the original Control, which has since earned cult status despite a more modest critical standing at launch. Yet the response is not unanimous. A number of reviewers, including Polygon, have raised concerns about the game’s direction, pointing to mechanical weaknesses and a sense that the series has drifted toward safer, more diluted territory. The shift from Control’s signature “slipstream” gameplay into a more conventional open-world action-RPG has drawn criticism from those who felt the franchise lost some of its edge.

A Track Record That Opens Doors

That consistency places Remedy squarely in the middle of the awards’ sweet spot: slick, graphically impressive, blockbuster action-adventures crafted with genuine artistic intent. The fact that the studio operates outside the traditional major-publisher system only strengthens that credibility in the eyes of many voters, who tend to reward originality and creative risk over commercial polish.

“We’ve always tried to make games with a distinct artistic voice, and it’s rewarding to see that perspective reflected in how the community and industry respond to our work.”

Remedy Entertainment

Beyond the track record, a powerful underdog narrative surrounds the studio. Remedy is widely regarded as talented and cool, and its creative director, Sam Lake, is known for being approachable and eager to engage with journalists. But the most compelling story circulating is financial. A growing belief holds that Remedy is in dire straits and needs Control Resonant to succeed in order to secure its future — a sentiment so strong that the main game-piracy subreddit has become filled with earnest posts advocating that players buy the game specifically to support the studio.

That narrative is partly rooted in reality. Remedy is not a money-making powerhouse, and it was wounded by the failure of last year’s misguided Control spinoff, the multiplayer shooter FBC: Firebreak. However, its most recent financial report showed modest profits and did not spell immediate doom and gloom. Industry observers note that the in-development remake of the first two Max Payne games, made in collaboration with Rockstar Games, may ultimately have a larger impact on Remedy’s financial future than Control Resonant itself.

Looking Ahead

Despite these caveats, the goodwill toward Remedy remains a significant asset in the awards race. The perception of the studio as a lone survivor — risking financial ruin to make original, artistically daring big-budget games its own way — makes its struggle feel more heroic than that of smaller indie outfits, even if titles like Mina the Hollower are more commercially viable. That sympathy may well extend to the Game Awards jury as much as it does to online communities, and it could tip some votes in Control Resonant’s favor.

Still, the game is not a lock. It has no realistic hope of acting as a serious spoiler for Grand Theft Auto 6, and it faces stronger contenders in its genre category, such as 007 First Light. If Control Resonant earns a Game of the Year nomination, the studio’s reputation and the emotional weight of its story will likely be a major reason why.

As The Game Awards 2026 approaches, the focus will remain on the final category standings and the broader field of nominees. For Remedy, the stakes are less about a single trophy than about reinforcing its standing as a studio willing to take creative risks — a reputation that has defined its career and may well carry it forward.
