The Trump administration is reportedly considering implementing a new round of tariffs on imported computer chips, which could have a ripple effect across the entire tech industry, including gaming.
The Tariff Threat: What’s at Stake?
According to a report by Politico, the administration is exploring expanding the number of tech products subject to these duties. This could include everyday electronics that rely on these chips, directly impacting gaming consoles, data center servers, and even laptops. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick’s stated goal is to incentivize foreign tech companies to build manufacturing plants within the US in exchange for tax relief.
While this plan is still under consideration and subject to change, sources at Politico suggest that any new tariffs would be implemented gradually if approved. Tech companies have already voiced concerns that these taxes could backfire, potentially hindering the US’s efforts to compete in the rapidly evolving artificial intelligence landscape. Building advanced chip factories capable of producing crucial components like semiconductors and memory requires massive investments (billions of dollars) and years of development.
This wouldn’t be the first time that console prices have been affected by US tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. Sony, Nintendo, and Microsoft have all previously increased the prices of their hardware. While these companies haven’t explicitly linked the price hikes directly to tariffs, citing broader global economic instability as contributing factors, they have acknowledged that tariff refunds have positively impacted their financial performance.
Notably, both Sony and Nintendo received substantial “paydays” earlier this year after the US Supreme Court declared Trump’s tariffs unlawful. However, these savings haven’t been passed on to consumers. In a move that stands in stark contrast, Panic, the company behind the PlayDate handheld console, announced this week that it will be refunding anyone who bought the device when its price was increased to offset the impact of tariffs.
